Đã từng có thời khi nhắc đến Banpresto thì game thủ ngay lập tức nhớ đến dòng game Super Robot Wars và ngược lại, bởi vì đơn giản đây là thương hiệu thu hút đông đảo người hâm mộ trên khắp thế giới đến từ một studio chỉ chuyên làm game cho thị trường Nhật Bản và rất ít khi sản phẩm của họ được “xuất ngoại” (một phần vì vấn đề bản quyền đắt đỏ tại Nhật). Điều này có thể chứng minh thông qua việc dòng game này chỉ có vài bản mang tên Original Generation (ví dụ như Super Robot Wars OG The Moon Dwellers) là được phát hành ở trời Tây, trong khi những phiên bản khác hấp dẫn hơn nhiều lại chỉ có thể được thưởng thức thông qua các bản dịch không chính thức do người hâm mộ thực hiện. Dù vậy, số phận của Banpresto – cũng giống như những studio nhỏ lẻ khác tại Nhật – đã bị “ông trùm” Bandai Namco thây tóm, sát nhập với BEC để tạo nên B.B. Studio. Cũng trong thời gian gần đây, xu hướng của Bandai Namco luôn phát hành bản tiếng Anh của nhiều tựa game Nhật đến với với thị trường châu Á hay đặc biệt là Đông Nam Á.
Chính vì lẽ đó, Super Robot Wars V là tựa game “chính thống” – có sự tham gia của nhiều robot đến từ các sản phẩm khác nhau tại Nhật (hay còn gọi là “crossover”) – đầu tiên trong lịch sử dòng game này có phiên bản tiếng Anh. Theo nhà sản xuất, V trong phiên bản kỷ niệm 25 năm dòng game có ý nghĩa như “Voyage”, tượng trưng cho một hành trình mới hứa hẹn thành công và đáng nhớ hơn.
Super Robot Wars V giữ lối chơi quen thuộc, độ khó hầu như chỉ ở mức vừa phải với những yếu tố đặc trưng của riêng mình. Super Robot Wars V bao gồm nhiều màn khác nhau với đa phần nhiệm vụ chính yêu cầu tiêu diệt toàn bộ kẻ thù với số lượng robot có trong tay người chơi. Số lượng này nhìn chung khá phong phú, trải dài từ những loại robot đa dạng kích cỡ đến từ nhiều loạt sản phẩm danh tiếng như Gundam, Getter Robot,… cho đến các chiến hạm khổng lồ. Mỗi loại đều có thông số riêng biệt về tốc độ, sức mạnh, năng lượng và đều hữu dụng cho từng chiến thuật khác nhau. Góc nhìn của game tiếp tục hướng từ trên xuống giúp người chơi dễ dàng bao quát khi đến lược đi của mình.
Super Robot Wars V đem đến nhiều yếu tố mới khiến quá trình trải nghiệm game trở nên thú vị hơn. Đầu tiên là sự trở lại của chế độ Beginner’s Mode giúp cho các trận đánh dễ thở hơn, phù hợp với những người chơi mới hay những ai chỉ chơi vì cốt truyện. Tiếp theo là hai tính năng Extra Order và Extra Action, tương tự như Spirit nhưng lại ảnh hưởng khá lớn đến cục diện trận đánh. Cùng với đó là hệ thống Skill Route và Skill Program giúp phát triển các kỹ năng của Pilot thông qua điểm Tactical Point, hay mua sắm những thiết bị hỗ trợ robot trong Factory. Tất cả sẽ khiến cho người chơi có cảm giác tùy biến thoải mái hơn so với trước đây, thay vì chỉ tập trung nâng cấp cho robot và tuyệt kỹ của chúng.

Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden is a side story in the second generation of Banpresto’s robot saga, originally released for the PlayStation in 2001. The soundtrack for the game followed the example of its predecessor, combining original vocal themes, arrangements of anime favourites, and new instrumental compositions. The album released for the game is thankfully complete and encompassing, unlike those for the Super Robot Wars Alpha. Let’s take a closer look…
Body
While a fair proportion of the theme song arrangements are rehashed, there are thankfully some new tracks on Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden. Most significantly, entries from the Gundam series return with favourites such as “The Winner”, “Silent Voice”, and “Dreams”, at the sacrifice of popular entries such as Gunbuster and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Sadly, the new tracks bring little stylistically novel to the table. Sure, “The Winner” might feature a saxophone lead for a change, but it’s still as superficial and badly synthesised as the rest of the arrangements. At least a few of the closing tracks, most notably “Attack the Mother Ship!”, bring some much-needed drama to the mostly upbeat selections.
When the arrangements of the anime theme songs and original character themes are considered, there is relatively little original material on Super Robot Wars Gaiden. The 18 or so new compositions are somehow squeezed on to the second half of the single disc soundtrack with very sudden fade-outs. Quite a few compositions resemble the anime theme song arrangements with their upbeat melody-focused approach. For example, “Spring Breeze Presia” sounds super-happy and only really differentiates itself from other additions with its flute lead. “Project Aegis” meanwhile has a slightly more epic tone, but is still at heart a motivating anthem. Both work really well in their respectively contexts, but it’s difficult to enjoy them out of context given the similar, albeit inferior, material that precedes.
Thankfully, there are some much darker compositions that finally give the soundtrack the depth and variety it desperately needed. “Ancestor” nicely bridges the ‘happy’ and ‘dark’ portions of the soundtrack with its excellent conflicted orchestration. They give way to much more aggressive and modernist orchestrations such as “Advancing Army of Giant Machines”, “Future Running Astray”, and “Break the Chains” that are impressively implemented on the PlayStation. “Sleep…” and “Earth Cradle” meanwhile adhere to the RPG cliché of gothic organ-based dramatic themes, but are still very wholesome. “The Gate of Magus” rounds off the album in an impressive manner, combining the orchestral and gothic elements featured earlier with contemporary electronic beats.
Summary
Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden was only ever intended to be a sidestory and the soundtrack unfortunately shows this. It is largely a continuation of its predecessor and offers essentially no novel ideas. This is acceptable in the context of the game, where even the anime theme song arrangements have their place, but results in a rather monotone and uninspiring stand-alone listen. Skip this in favour of other albums in the Alpha subseries.
